Men's Committee Meeting Minutes

April 11, 2011

In attendance: Kevin McKee, Brett Breslin, Barry Tucker, Jay Sullivan, Bill Panzino, Steve May, Doug Clay, Jack McCarty and Bill McPhee. (That's right folks; all members were in attendance. It's going to be a very good year.)

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairman, Kevin McKee.

Treasurers Report

Treasurer Bill Panzino presented his report. It was briefly discussed by the committee. It was VOTED unanimously that the committee accept the Treasurer's Report.

Secretary's Report

Secretary Bill McPhee submitted his minutes from the March 7, 2011 meeting. They had previously been submitted via e-mail and posted to the web site. It was VOTED unanimously that the Committee accept the minutes.

Greens

Doug Clay reported that he has had an ongoing dialogue with Ed and the effort to clean-up the course continues. The fairways and greens have been cut and the bunkers have been raked by hand and mechanically. Doug has asked the members to please be diligent about following the rules pertaining to the condition of the course. (While I'm at it, you should all be following the rules pertaining to the Rules of Golf, but that's another subject.) Doug asked me to remind you that we must be careful to follow all cart path rules, keep pull carts to the outsides of the greenside bunkers, replace divots, repair ball marks, rake traps and generally be courteous and considerate to your fellow members and the course. The right side of the 13th hole will be played as ground under repair between the white lines or other markers used by the superintendent or pro. If you are within the ground under area you may drop your ball to the left side (towards the fairway) of the markers or white lines, one club length, no nearer the hole. If you are to the right side of the ground under area (the tree side) you must play the ball as it lies.  It was VOTED unanimously that the Committee accept the report.

Handicaps

Jack McCarty reported that scores after April 1st should be posted. Any new members who do not have a CCH handicap can see Bob Giusti and get an application which should be given to the Executive Committee with your association fee of $50 (which includes your handicap fee). There was a spirited discussion about how to solve the annual springtime conundrum of the lack of communication between the Executive Committee (who collects the fees) and the Men's Committee (who supervise and monitor the handicaps and tournaments). Although there may not have been a consensus on how to solve this issue, at least no fisticuffs ensued. Chairman McKee will attempt to negotiate a solution with The Executive Committee so that we can assure that all association members have a handicap in an efficient manner. If you do not have a valid CCH handicap you will not be able to play in tournaments. Even though the association application did not state a date, the fee is due prior to the opening day scramble. Avoid the stress and aggravation by getting your application and fee in right away. Jack McCarty wants to make sure that he can enter or keep you in the system so please make sure you have paid and The Men's Committee has received verification from The Executive Committee. Although Jack and Bob Giusti take the brunt of the abuse regarding this problem every year, there is nothing they can do until they get your name on the list from The Executive Committee. Jack asks that you take care in filling in your score cards. Please...names, local numbers, tees, signatures, attests, and always...equitable stroke control. If you don't know what ESC is, ask Bob or Jack. Lastly, Steve May reports that since he has become Asst. Handicap Chairman he is happy with his handicap. Take that as you will. I only write down the notes and type the minutes. It was VOTED unanimously to accept the report.

Tournaments

The Opening Day Scramble will be played on April 23, 2011. Applications are available at The Pro Shop, via Brett's ranting e-mails, and on The Men's Committee web site. Barry Tucker reports that he is exited at the prospect of a great tournament year. ( Now you all know that I totally made that up as Barry doesn't get excited about much of anything. But I do know he must be a little excited to get the tournaments started because his chits are getting low). But, it does look like a great bunch of returning and new tournament players. Get you ODS applications in straightaway. It should be a large field with The Opening Day Party commencing at 6:00 that evening. For those of you who have not experienced a post tournament gathering that goes directly into a club party...it is a happening. Jimmy Silvia will be entertaining and is a perfect fit for this type of event. Food and beverage as always. It was VOTED unanimously to accept the report.

Pro Shop

Bob reports that his staff is coming back bit by bit. Joe Caffrey, the new assistant pro, is on the scene. Stop by and say hello. Members...please don't scare him too soon. Ray, Meagan, and Pat have made an appearance and the others will be here shortly. The Wednesday Night League begins May 18th. Bob has some interesting ideas he wants to try so pay attention to his Halifax Happenings. Bob has a tee program where anyone who would like to advertise a business can purchase personalized tees which would then be available to members and their guests throughout the season. Ask Bob about it. He also has the 4 for the price of 3 pro v1 deal that is ending soon. It may already be too late but give him a call. Lastly, how are your grips and spikes? Should they be replaced? See Bob.

House Committee

Since there was no House Committee meeting there is nothing to report.

Executive Committee

Kevin McKee reported that he met with the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee requested a contribution from The Men's Committee towards new flagsticks, flags, and driving range markers. It was VOTED unanimously to make the contribution. The Executive Committee also wanted all members who donate and participate in The Folds of Honor Program to know the contributions made using American Express will be matched by Amex. The Cronin is scheduled for the end of the month. The course is closed to non-playing members on the 28th and 29th. For those who have considered The Cronin but never played it is a great opportunity to watch players who actually know what they're doing...unlike your humble Secretary.

New Business

The plaques memorializing members who have died is up. They are on the back of the clock sign on the first tee. Thank you to Jack McCarty for the idea and Kevin McKee for implementing it. Please take a minute to look at the names. Any of you who know the members of The Men's Committee know that though we try, we are far from perfect. If you know anyone who should be memorialized, and is not, it is an unintended error. Let us know so we can correct it. Any other suggestions, comments or complaints are welcome. We want to know what you think. Please forward them to wmcphee@comcast.net

The meeting was adjourned at 6:50 P.M. (Pretty efficient Huh!). The next meeting is scheduled for May 10, 2011 @ 6:00 or as called by the Chairman.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill McPhee
